Cub Leader OWL Training now combined with BALOO into one course

New Syllabus for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation(BALOO)

Cub Scout leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities are required to have at least one BALOO trained adult on every Cub Scout den or pack overnight outdoor event – including Pack Camping and Webelos Den overnighters. BALOO training sets a unit up to carry out a successful camping experience for Scouts.

The new BALOO syllabus is now available at http://www.scouting.org/training/adult.aspx.This new syllabus combines both the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) and Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) previously used into one training curriculum.

BALOO training is comprised of two components – an online component, and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader.
The online component contains introductory and basic information, and must be completed prior to the practical component. The goal of the online portion is to make the best use of time to allow leaders to experience as much as possible during the practical hands-on training.

Successful completion of BALOO training has a positive impact on the confidence level of a Cub Scout Leader, and promotes a willingness to plan a Pack overnighter. Camping activities and outings that are fun, based on the purposes of Cub Scouting, and successful, often whet the appetite of Cub Scouts, parents, and leaders to desire more of the outdoors.
The online portion of BALOO is available around-the-clock on the BSA Learn Center by logging into my.scouting.org.

The practical, hands on component of the new BALOO syllabus will be presented by the Silver Comet District Training Committee this coming April. Please watch our District website, and website Calendar for information and registration details to be available soon.

Cub Scout Fall Recruiting Starts in August

Posted on Jul 28 2018 - 9:12pm

Silver Comet Pack Leaders, Fall Recruiting is just around the corner and our Membership Committee, District Executives, and Commissioners are ready to partner with you in making this our best year ever for Cub recruiting.

Listen to our Membership Chair and District Executive discuss this year's Fall Recruiting campaign and how Packs can make their efforts successful on our Silver Comet Membership Fall Recruiting Podcast.

This is our first recruiting campaign to bring girls as well as boys into Scouting and we want to welcome the girls into the Packs that are ready and able to provide them with a great Scouting experience. To let Families know whether your Charter Organization and your Pack have decided to form Dens for girls this Fall, please have your authorized Leader(s) go to my.scouting.org/ log in, and update your Unit's "pin" with the relevant membership information. Go to this document for detailed guidance on accessing and editing your Pack's Beascout "pin".

Please also look at the District website "Cub Scouts" page and note the "Family Scouting" information listed for your Pack. If it needs to be changed please send updated information to https://www.silvercometdistrictbsa.org/contact

Cub Scout Fall Recruiting Training at June Roundtable

Posted on Jun 8 2019 - 10:59pm

Pack leaders, June Roundtable will feature a special breakout dedicated to Fall Recruiting! Please make sure that your recruiting coordinator attends this important training. If your pack doesn't have a volunteer that specifically coordinates your school sign up process, it would still be appropriate to send someone to this breakout to collect information for your pack on how to run a successful fall recruiting season. If possible, have your Pack representative bring a Pack calendar for the 2019/20 school year, information about your Pack meeting place (night, address, Chartered Organization name, and time that your pack meets), and information about your annual Pack dues. Our District Executives, Hubert Snow and JoAnna Zackery, will use this information to create your recruiting materials. If you can get this information to the DEs by June Roundtable or by July 8th at the latest, you will be able to pick up your recruiting materials at the July Roundtable Picnic.

This fall recruiting training will help your Pack be prepared for a busy back-to-school Cub Scout season, so please make every effort to have a Pack representative attend!
