Silver Comet Turkey Shoot Draws 480 Cub Scouts

Posted on Nov 15 2018 - 4:49pm

With 480 Cub Scouts from 23 Packs, and the Siblings, Parents, Pack Leaders, and Adult and Youth Staff, over 1600 members of our Silver Comet Scout Family enjoyed a great day out on November 3rd at our 2018 Turkey Shoot. We were also glad to welcome many Scouts and families from our neighboring Pickett's Mill District whose Turkey Shoot had to be cancelled at the last minute.

Our event co-hosts, Troops 350 and 2096, made sure everyone had a great time as the event returned to Jim R Miller Park for 2018. Cub Scouts and Families took advantage of the perfect weather to shoot BBs and Arrows, scale the Climbing Wall, play some games, and have a lot of fun.

It takes an experienced and talented Committee of dedicated Scouters to plan, organize, and present an event of this size, and we thank each and every one of the 80 staff volunteers that contributed in any way to the huge success of the day.

Special recognition goes to the longtime Leaders that bring this event to life every year,
Steve Helbling, R J Kolencik, Jeff Starnes, and Randy Thacker. And a special thanks to our Rangemasters: Shawn Blake; Leah Briick; Bob Griffin; Brian Huang; Mike Kozar; David Oakley; Samantha Schuster; Chuck Stewart; Sharla Stewart; and John Watts for dedicating your day to our Cub Scouts.

Thank You All for making the Turkey Shoot a safe, fun, and memorable day for our Silver Comet Cubs and their Families.

Silver Comet WEBELOS Open House - Nov. 6 at Due West UMC

Posted on Oct 20 2018 - 11:25am

Webelos and their Parents: will have an opportunity to meet and talk with several Troops in their area, ask questions and get the information they need when deciding which Unit they want to join when they crossover. You can download and print a copy of "Troop Visit Questions" for ideas of what to ask the Troops at the Open House event.
For more complete Webelos Transition information download our "Silver Comet Webelos Transition Manual".

Troops: set up a display of their activities and are on hand to answer questions about Boy Scouting in their Unit. Troops should fill out and return the “Troop Information Sheet” by October 31st. The District Membership team will hand out the Information Sheet to all Webelos at the event. Email your Information Sheet to our Silver Comet Membership Chair.
For details on the display and venue guidelines view/download our "SCD Webelos Open House Exhibitor Guidelines". Also have a look at the "Silver Comet Webelos Transition Manual" which will help you to “be prepared” for the questions the Webelos and their Parents will be asking.

For the Open House location, times and other details, and any updates go to the 2018 Webelos Open House event webpage

The Peace Light has arrived in Atlanta

Posted on Dec 8 2018 - 10:42pm

Each year, a child from Austria fetches the Peace Light (a flame) from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born.

The light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations, including Scouts and Guides from across Europe who take it back with a message of Peace to their own countries for use at ecumenical services throughout the Continent. Austrian Airlines then flies the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light to New York City. The goal is to help the light spread like the branches of a huge tree rooted in New York and spreading throughout the North American continent.

The Peace Light arrived in Atlanta on Saturday, December 08, and will be available starting on the 10th at the Atlanta Area Council Service Center (see Donna Carr) and also at the Silver Comet District Round Table on December 13th where you may receive the light (in a suitable safe container or lantern of your own) for your scout unit, your religious institution, your own home, hospitals, homeless shelters, retirement homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural, and political importance. The peace Light is available to anyone who appreciates the significance of the "gift" of peace.

World Conservation Award has new requirements, effective immediately

Posted on Dec 17 2016 - 3:27pm

The BSA National Conservation and Environment Task Force has announced new requirements for the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing/Sea Scout versions of the World Conservation Award. The new requirements, which are now in effect, can be found at this link.

Whether you know the World Conservation Award as the “panda patch” or as the award that encourages Scouts and Venturers to think globally and act locally to improve and conserve our environment, there’s something you need to know.

The new requirements reflect the recent changes to the Cub Scout advancement program and the addition of the Eagle-required Sustainability merit badge in the Boy Scout program.
