Thanks To All Our Latter-day Saints Scouters, Past and Recent

Posted on Jan 4 2020 - 9:21pm

To all of our Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Scouters,

Thank you for the countless hours you have devoted to the mission of Scouting; preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

Thank you to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on New Macland Road, who graciously hosted our monthly Roundtable meeting for the past six years. You opened your doors to a fledgling merged district that needed a place for Scouters to fellowship on a monthly basis, and truly made us feel at home.

Many of the names we see listed in the Silver Comet Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Units have served Scouting for more than a decade, and have presented the Scouting program to many, many youth over those years, giving them the opportunity to experience the personal growth and individual challenges and successes that the Scouting program offers. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve with you on the Scouting journey.

We hope that many of you will continue Scouting in traditional Units, offering your remarkable talents and dedication to upcoming generations of young people as they each begin to make their way in the world.

Yours in Scouting,

The Peace Light has arrived in Atlanta

Posted on Dec 8 2018 - 10:42pm

Each year, a child from Austria fetches the Peace Light (a flame) from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born.

The light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations, including Scouts and Guides from across Europe who take it back with a message of Peace to their own countries for use at ecumenical services throughout the Continent. Austrian Airlines then flies the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light to New York City. The goal is to help the light spread like the branches of a huge tree rooted in New York and spreading throughout the North American continent.

The Peace Light arrived in Atlanta on Saturday, December 08, and will be available starting on the 10th at the Atlanta Area Council Service Center (see Donna Carr) and also at the Silver Comet District Round Table on December 13th where you may receive the light (in a suitable safe container or lantern of your own) for your scout unit, your religious institution, your own home, hospitals, homeless shelters, retirement homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural, and political importance. The peace Light is available to anyone who appreciates the significance of the "gift" of peace.

Update your BeAScout.org Pin - An Important Reminder from Bryan on Scouting

Posted on Aug 3 2019 - 10:22pm

This was taken from Bryan on Scouting's post on January 28th, 2019, but it's very timely as we start the fall recruiting season!

Today’s parents can do it all online. With a few taps on their tablet, they can buy school supplies, sign up for soccer or hire a babysitter. More and more these days, they’re finding out about Scouting online, too. Today’s parents want, and expect, to learn more about the BSA through a simple-to-use, nicely designed website. BeAScout.org is that website. It is the first thing many prospective Scouting families see about the BSA, and it tells them what Scouting is, why it’s a good fit for their family and where they can find a Cub Scout pack, Scouts BSA troop, Venturing crew or Sea Scout ship near them.

That last part — the where — is where you come in. It’s time to update your unit’s listing on BeAScout.org, and I’ll tell you why. You see, when moms and dads visit BeAScout.org, they can enter their ZIP code to find all the Scout units near them.

These results show up as pins, with each representing a pack, troop, crew or ship nearby. Updating your BeAScout.org pin is simple, and it’s a good way to make sure your information is current — that it doesn’t list last year’s Unit Leader or meeting time, for example.

Access to update your pin is available to all unit leaders, including committee members in a unit.

To update your pin:

Go to My.Scouting.org

In the drop-down menu, go to Legacy Web Tools and select BeAScout.

Choose “unit” (rather than council) under “Unit Pin Mode” to update the pin with your contact info.

Be sure to set pin status to “active.” If they want the “Apply Now” button on the pin, set “Apply Status” to “active.”

Note that it may take a few hours, or up to overnight, for the updated information to show up.

For Cub Scout packs: You’ll also want to go to Organization Manager and identify your pack’s gender: all-boy, all-girl or a mix of all-boy dens and all-girl dens. Under Organization Manager, find the settings tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. The default is Boys Dens, but you can change that. Be sure to enter an effective date or it will not update the pin.

If you need help with updating your pin, contact our District Chair, Cathie McCabe at districtchair@silvercometdistrict1.mytroop.us.
