Update on 2020 Order of the Arrow Elections in Troops and Crews

Posted on May 16 2020 - 9:35pm

The National Director of the Order of the Arrow has authorized Lodges to conduct virtual Unit elections provided that they are conducted in accordance with specific guidance issued by the National Director and are approved, in advance, by the Council Executive. Our Lodge, Egwa Tawa Dee, is in the process of developing a plan that will allow Chapters to conduct virtual elections. Once that plan has been approved and tested, our Chapter, Silepl Ilaonetu, will begin holding 2020 OA elections using the virtual format. The unit leader must agree, in writing, to holding a virtual election and it will be in lieu of holding an in-person election.

In-person elections will not be authorized by the Lodge until such time as public health authorities and the Council have determine that it is safe to do so. Once the Lodge is authorized to begin conducting in-person elections, there will be a 30-day period in which to hold an in-person election in the units that did not previously hold an in-person election prior to March 13, 2020 or a virtual election in the 2020 election season.

The Chapter is responsible for reporting to the Lodge the decision of EVERY unit in the Silver Comet District. If your unit has held its election, you're all set for this election season, and you just need to patiently wait for additional Lodge information regarding induction weekends later in the year. If your in-person election was canceled in March, please send an email to the address below to request a virtual election or a future in-person election. Even if you do not have eligible youth, or do not want to hold an OA election in 2020, please send an email to the address below. Thank you in advance for helping the youth leadership of the chapter complete their paperwork requirements for the Lodge! Click "read more" for the email address and the instructions to make your unit report.

Update your BeAScout.org Pin - An Important Reminder from Bryan on Scouting

Posted on Aug 3 2019 - 10:22pm

This was taken from Bryan on Scouting's post on January 28th, 2019, but it's very timely as we start the fall recruiting season!

Today’s parents can do it all online. With a few taps on their tablet, they can buy school supplies, sign up for soccer or hire a babysitter. More and more these days, they’re finding out about Scouting online, too. Today’s parents want, and expect, to learn more about the BSA through a simple-to-use, nicely designed website. BeAScout.org is that website. It is the first thing many prospective Scouting families see about the BSA, and it tells them what Scouting is, why it’s a good fit for their family and where they can find a Cub Scout pack, Scouts BSA troop, Venturing crew or Sea Scout ship near them.

That last part — the where — is where you come in. It’s time to update your unit’s listing on BeAScout.org, and I’ll tell you why. You see, when moms and dads visit BeAScout.org, they can enter their ZIP code to find all the Scout units near them.

These results show up as pins, with each representing a pack, troop, crew or ship nearby. Updating your BeAScout.org pin is simple, and it’s a good way to make sure your information is current — that it doesn’t list last year’s Unit Leader or meeting time, for example.

Access to update your pin is available to all unit leaders, including committee members in a unit.

To update your pin:

Go to My.Scouting.org

In the drop-down menu, go to Legacy Web Tools and select BeAScout.

Choose “unit” (rather than council) under “Unit Pin Mode” to update the pin with your contact info.

Be sure to set pin status to “active.” If they want the “Apply Now” button on the pin, set “Apply Status” to “active.”

Note that it may take a few hours, or up to overnight, for the updated information to show up.

For Cub Scout packs: You’ll also want to go to Organization Manager and identify your pack’s gender: all-boy, all-girl or a mix of all-boy dens and all-girl dens. Under Organization Manager, find the settings tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. The default is Boys Dens, but you can change that. Be sure to enter an effective date or it will not update the pin.

If you need help with updating your pin, contact our District Chair, Cathie McCabe at districtchair@silvercometdistrict1.mytroop.us.

Volunteer Request for City of Acworth's Mother-Son Campout on September 14th

Posted on Sep 7 2019 - 9:40pm

BSA volunteers continue to help the City of Acworth Parks & Recreation with their annual Mother-Son Campout and we need your help.

Cubs and Scouts are welcome to come to Proctor Landing on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11:00am to help non-Scouts set up tents and staff games and activities. Come for as long as you can stay and eat for free! "Class B" attire is fine for this event. We plan to have orienteering, fishing, air rockets, cooking, and crafting para-cord bracelets and t-shirt bags. Contact Jeff Starnes at jlstarnes@bellsouth.net if you can help.

Webelos Woods and Webelos Open House

Posted on Nov 2 2019 - 11:38pm

Thanks to our dedicated Membership Committee, the District's Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts were treated to not one but two district events in October!

First, they participated in a fun, camporee-style weekend at Woodruff Scout Reservation at Webelos Woods. 130 Webelos and AOL Scouts played patrol and camp-wide games, practiced orienteering and cooking, and took part in a campfire and Scouts' Own service. The District would like to thank Leah Briick and Chris Voigt for organizing and running the event, Audrey Taylor, Nancy Domoracki, and Katie Robinson for running the Health Lodge, RJ Kolencik and Shannon Fishback for cooking for the staff, and the Scouts and Scouters of Troop 675 (boys and girls), Troop 2096, and Crew 2500 for staffing the games.

On October 22nd, we held our most successful Webelos Open House ever! 66 Arrow of Light and Webelos Scouts attended the event and had the opportunity to visit with 23 different Scouts BSA units! If you missed this event or if you missed picking up a troop information packet, a pdf copy is now available here: https://www.silvercometdistrictbsa.org/system/files/WebelosOpenHouse2019.pdf. Thanks again to Leah Briick and Chris Voigt for organizing this event that facilitates the Webelos to Scout transition. Thank you also to Due West United Methodist Church for hosting the event for our district.

World Conservation Award has new requirements, effective immediately

Posted on Dec 17 2016 - 3:27pm

The BSA National Conservation and Environment Task Force has announced new requirements for the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing/Sea Scout versions of the World Conservation Award. The new requirements, which are now in effect, can be found at this link.

Whether you know the World Conservation Award as the “panda patch” or as the award that encourages Scouts and Venturers to think globally and act locally to improve and conserve our environment, there’s something you need to know.

The new requirements reflect the recent changes to the Cub Scout advancement program and the addition of the Eagle-required Sustainability merit badge in the Boy Scout program.
