As we head into a new Scouting year, August is an important time for units across the Silver Comet District. Families are getting back into their school-year routines, Cub Scout Packs are preparing for recruiting events, and Scouts BSA troops are looking for new ways to connect with families in their communities.
To help leaders prepare for the months ahead, Scouting America has released its August Membership Newsletter, filled with ideas, resources, and reminders designed to help units recruit new members, welcome new families, and keep Scouts engaged.
Practical Ideas for Every Unit
The newsletter includes several topics that are especially relevant as we enter the fall recruiting season.
Follow Up With Prospective Families
Families who have expressed interest in Scouting are already raising their hands—they just need someone to help them take the next step. The newsletter offers reminders and resources for following up with membership leads and making sure interested families don't get lost in the process.
Build Strong Community Relationships
Successful recruiting doesn't begin with a flyer. It begins with relationships.
Schools, community organizations, churches, businesses, and local events can all become valuable partners for Scouting. Being visible and involved in the communities we serve helps families understand that Scouting is an active and welcoming part of their neighborhood.
Make Scouting Visible
Sometimes, the simplest ideas can make a difference. From recruiting signs to community events and other forms of local visibility, units have plenty of opportunities to remind families that Scouting is happening right here in the Silver Comet District.
Encourage Scouts to Bring a Friend
One of the best recruiting tools we have is our Scouts themselves. When a Scout invites a friend to an activity or meeting, that invitation can be much more meaningful than any advertisement. The newsletter also highlights the Recruiter Strip, giving Scouts an opportunity to be recognized for helping introduce a friend to Scouting.
Remember That Retention Matters
Recruiting is only half of the equation. Once a family joins, we want them to feel welcomed, connected, and excited about what comes next.
The newsletter includes ideas for helping new families get involved and making sure their first experiences with Scouting are positive ones.
More Resources for Leaders
The August newsletter also includes information about technology resources, parent involvement, membership renewal, Den Helpers, reconnecting with former Scouts, and other tools that can help units strengthen their programs.
For unit leaders, this is a great time to take a few minutes to review the resources and consider:
What is one idea we can put into action this month?
It might be following up with a prospective family, inviting a friend to an upcoming activity, connecting with a local school, putting up a recruiting sign, or simply finding a better way to welcome a new family.
Small actions, repeated across dozens of units, can make a tremendous difference.

We encourage Silver Comet District leaders, volunteers, and unit committees to take a look at the August Membership Newsletter and see what ideas could work for your unit.
